OLD IRON

YA ... IT'S IN HERE SOMEWHERE!  Some friends of mine working on their Allis.

THESE ARE PARKED BY MY PLACE ... THEY HAD BEEN DOING SOME LOGGING IN MY AREA LAST YEAR WHEN THEY GOT THESE.

THERE'S A PAIR OF THESE ... ONE JUST FOR PARTS.

I told them I'd see if I could find some places to list these for sale on the INTERNET.  I knew about TODAYS TRACTORS; there, they have free classifieds & free photo ads & will run for 30 days.

My son had told me about another place to put ads; it might not be in for several days?:

SHIFTING PROBLEMS

Indifference WELL, ONE OF THE GUYS STOPPED BY ... I told him of the problems shifting the tractor.  Of course, when we started the tractor up ... the gears didn't lock up for him!  But, he could see that it was not going into the various gears easily.  He kept putting it into each gear, over & over again ... eventually the problem seemed to go away.  His prescription was to avoid first gear & just do the running thru the gear positions to get the one that I wanted to work!      THIS IDEA IS NOT NEW TO ME ... I JUST WAS WORRIED TO RUIN SOMETHING AFTER THE BIG REPAIR BILL & LONG WAIT.

I'm going to use the tractor, CAREFULLY, to see if it does this again.   ALSO,  I'm going to keep asking around to get opinions about this shifting problem.  Since I have the shop manual, the parts book, & the owner's manual, I think I'll make copies of some of those pages... my sons are very knowledgeable mechanics.  (Too bad they're so far away.)

OUR TRACTORS IN WISCONSIN WERE ALLIS CHALMERS (2) D17's.  The one I used to launch boats with at our Marina   didn't want to go into gear.  I'd be hanging onto the brakes for all I could ... not wanting to have the tractor, trailer, & big boat roll backwards into the DEEP river.  I kept a hammer by my feet on the tractor & tap the shift lever into the gear I wanted!

ALSO ... SHIFTING GEARS ON OTHER MACHINERY ... LIKE MY SEMI ...  I'd have to poke it into another gear or two before I could get it into the one that I really wanted.  I was so used to it, I didn't even really think about it as I was doing it.  Maybe it helped get the RPM's down so it would shift easier?

I'm in denial; the tractor is not working.

JUST NOW, I POSTED THIS QUESTION ON THE JOHN DEERE FORUM ... HOPING FOR A REPLY.

Click here: Yesterday's Tractors - Discussion Forum

I had posted the questions on the sad problems that we had about the bill on our tractor overhaul.
http://www.ytmag.com/cgi-bin/viewit.cgi?bd=jd&th=229966

After paying the labor bill that was twice what was quoted, I have run the tractor twice.  First was plowing snow for about two  hours.  Then, it wouldn't start ... TOO COLD?
Today, I ran the tractor for about half an hour, again plowing snow.
Then, after pushing snow in REVERSE, I shifted back into first gear.  Engaging the hand-clutch ... the RPM'S went way down & I heard this sick little clunk ahead of me ... in the area of the engine.  The tractor never made any attempt to move forward.
I put it into reverse again; the tractor would move in reverse ( maybe it never came out of reverse?)
I put it into second gear this time ... again ... the RPM's came way down & the tractor did not move ... again that sickly little clunk in the forward area.
At the idle, or with the hand clutch disengaged ... everything was fine
I shut the tractor down ... checked all the fluids ... went into denial.
The nearest tractor mechanic is nearly a hundred miles away.  The guy who did the work on the tractor said that he wouldn't warrenty his job "because we used some after-market parts".
Should he be, nevertheless, required to see (at no extra charge) if something wasn't put back together right?
It is just not in the budget to do it the right way this time & have the tractor hauled a hundred miles to the REAL tractor mechanics.

The Prodigal Tractor Returns

LOOKING THRU THE STACKS ON THE JOHN DEERE AGAIN!

  YEAH!

THANKFULLY, the tractor was finally returned after its overhaul...

Since these pictures below were taken ... we've had more feet of snow ...looking out the sunroom window here.

YOU CAN SEE THE CAR, PICK-UP, & TRACTOR IN THE SNOW
& SORTA YOU CAN SEE MY DECK CHAIRS.

I did some plowing that day (Wednesday) ... sorta waiting for the stormS  to get all over before I tidied up the yard.   You know, up here, even if the groundhog sees his shadow, we're going to have at least more than six weeks of winter anyways!  I was snowed in for many days before the tractor got here ... plowed out ... uncovered my car ... made a trip into town to get some more deer corn, etc.  I usually have a good supply of everything on hand.  It was predicted that we'd have several more big snow storms ... we did!  Nothing like in NEW YORK (or up on Lake Superior, north of here) though.

The John Deere being delivered between snowstorms ... just the back grader blade on so far.

This is a welcome sight on this dead-end road, 3 1/2 miles in off the main road!

Some of my daily visitors.

Not a good place to stand.

THESE ARE SOME OF MY FAVORITE JOHNNIE PHOTOS
HERE'S JOHNNIE FROM A NEW PERSPECTIVE ... youTUBE.  I took this video as he came into the snow-filled driveway with the back blade:

It's been so long since I used the Johnnie ... I have to get used to it all over again.  I was so used to our Allis Chalmers that I keep going to the front of the tire to get on the tractor.

We've got the loader for the tractor ... & new hydraulics.... but, it's not put back on yet.  This is from two winters ago.

I've been gathering MANY links for this.  There are so many sources of online message boards, places to buy new & used parts, and other people's John Deere pages and Antique pagesNOTE: RIGHT-CLICK ON LINKS TO "OPEN IN A NEW PAGE" TO BREAK OUT OF THE AOL FRAMES ... close that new page to easily get back to my journal.
